This MSI must be launched through set up

The subject says it all... I am in the process of
recovering my computer after a nasty virus. Now comes
the need to install a anti-virus program. I chose to
load "Norton Internet Security 2004". The program kicks
me out dudring the initializing process with the
message: "This MSI must be lauched through setup." I am
at a loss at this point as to where to look for answers.
Of course I no longer have any of the original books or
disc's for the computer as they were lost during a move.
This request may seem simple in some eyes, but the way I
concider it, the only stupid question is the one not
asked.

Thank you

"Papa",
it sounds like you're clicking on the Windows Installer (.MSI) file to try
to install this software. Make sure you're using the SETUP.EXE file, which
seems to be what the program is asking for.

Good luck!

Mike:

Well, I went to "Start", then I typed in "setup.exe"
and it told me to go to "Control Panel". So, I went
to "Control Panel" clicked on "Add or Remove Programs".
Then I clicked on "Add New Programs". I went through all
the steps as I was directed. I scanned for viruses, came
up with 5 files that showed they had been deleted and
then went into the next phase of the install. As it
was "Initializing..." during the "Norton Internet
Security" was shown as a header, it kicked me out with
the "This MSI must be launched through setup" message.
I got a feeling that there is a "Setup.exe" program
that I can't seem to get to that will perform the install
on a deeper level, I don't know. But I am up for
suggestions...

Thanks a bunch

I had the same problem. If you just bought the software,
I'd return it while I could as NIS 2004 is the buggiest
software I've ever bought. If you don't want to do that,
here's a link to Symantec's knowledge base article on it.

You might get lucky and the uninstall will work, but mine
didn't. I ended up reformatting my hard drive and doing a
clean install. It's worked fine for 3 weeks, but now I
have another problem. I've used NIS for several years
now, but I think I'm going to pass them next time.

and try what it says about "this MSI..." If it doesn't
come up, it you might have to trick their search into
thinking your problem is with NAV rather than NIS.

I had NIS 2003 and uninstalled it. Then got that message
when trying to install NIS 2004.

This is the second time I'm writing a reply to this, so
it's shorter.

Go to www.symantec.com and go to the knowledge base for
your product. Then do a search on your error message. It
tells you what to do, but it didn't work so easily for me.
