I have an emachine pc, and have had it for 2 and a half years, it was
purchased from a local branch of PC world and the windows XP Home edition was
already pre installed on my computer. In the last couple of days i have been
experiencing messages like 'You may be a victim of software counterfeiting.
The Windows product key installed on this computer is not genuine.' and
bubbles in the icon bar saying i need to validate my product key. Anybody
any suggestions on whats wrong/what i sould do to solve this? Any help will
be very much appreciated!!

Try using System Restore to get to restore to a point prior to the
installation of the kb905474 update
[Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools]

Hi ... Two things I would try , First if the shop where you bought your
computer is still in business ? I would go and give them a visit as to whats
up with that , If they don't solve the problem ? Give Microsoft a call and
report them about software counterfeiting , Or just ask Microsoft for their
advise ....

Yet another case that proves that WGA only inconveniences paying
customers and doesn't affect piracy one iota.

Hanna, click on the balloon that tells you it's a pirated XP and follow
the instructions. When you get MS on the phone, give them holy hell.

Are you saying that PC World sells pirated XPs? Can you prove that or
are you just making it up as you go along?

Why do you ASSume that the version is pirated and not that WGA is flawed?

No I am not assuming anything , I am saying check with the company that sold
the computer because its probably OEM version which Microsoft doesn't
support and see whether they will solve the problem , If they don't ? Then I
would call microsoft and mention to them about this issues and as to what
can be done about it ( ADVISE ) ...

I am in the process of emailing the company from which i bought the PC to
see what they have to say on the matter. The copy of windows if perfectly
legal and has workes perfectly until now, my problem is that my computer
connot recieve the automatic updates and any time i try to update i am simply
told that i have no valid product id. Thanks for all the advice given, I had
tried the system restore yesterday but the problem only arose again this
morning. Begining to think it may be as simple as a dose of spyware, which i
have no idea how to sort out as i cannot find the infected files.

Yesterday I had a problem installing the windows verification tool after the
update site said I needed it and even downloaded it.. to begin with it was
because of pop ups...and much later the advance setting in the security
options. Once I had corrected the settings using their diagnose setting tool
it didn't even offer to install the validation tool or even say I needed it
in the update site. (the validation tool had in the past been installed)

Hannah,

Is it possible to use System Restore again to the time you were activated?
Then you can download the 'Windows Install Clean Up' utility at
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 .

* Install & Run the utility > click on 'Windows Genuine Advantage', select
'Remove'.

* Then go to 'Windows Update' and download your updates, including the new
'WGA', or don't. Hopefully both options would clear up your problem but I
can only guarantee 'not' installing the new 'WGA' will work for you, though
I'm not recommending you do this of course. But hey, Windows Update gives
you the option to 'Hide' future acknowledgements of updating 'WGA' so I
guess they don't mind, until you resolve your issue at least.

Yes, it is the spyware delivered to you through Auto Update called WGA
Notications, and it was created by MICROSOFT!

You should turn off Auto Update if you don't want MS to install its
malware on your system. And then learn how to update your OS through
Common Sense Computing:

Gosh, I am sure that this is what a computer user wants to do with his
or her computer. NOT! People usually buy computers to use them, not try
and configure oneself out of spyware disguised as a "critical update"
from MS.

Trust me, I don't expect an answer from Carey except, maybe, to get
called a troll. I post for the other readers who may not know where old

Hannah,

It's not spyware.

Over the last couple of years, Microsoft has made several attempts to
discourage use of copied/pirated Windows software. Until now, there
have been "ways around" MS's checks, and most have been rather
unsuccessful. These attempts by MS to stop illegal software have been
half-heaterd, to say the least. And where they have been successful,
there has almost instantly been "fixes/hacks/work-arounds/etc"
available on the 'net.

What has happened this time is that MS has included a checking tool in
their automatically downloaded critical updates - i.e. if your machine
is set to auto d/load updates, you got the checking tool installed,
and the results popup on your screen.

Irrespective of who you bought the machine from - reputable company or
otherwise - pirated/illegal copies can, and will, slip through. Dig
out your purchase invoices/reeceipts and take them to the retailer and
tell them what has happened.

(BTW, please ignore a the idiotic Microsoft "conspiracy theories"
posted in response to your original query. Whilst I agree that MS's
inclusion of this checking tool as a "critical update" is spurious,
the protestations of the anti-MS brigade clearly reveal their own
hidden agenda. As you can see, they offer no solution to your problem
but simply see it as an opportunity for often incoherent and illogical
rants. Their argument is often based solely on the fact that "I bought
it, I can do what I want with it! How can MS stop me using it?".

They fail to accept that all they purchased was a licence to use it,
thats' all - if in fact they have ever purchased it in the first
place.)

If you don't get any success from your retailer, contact MS as
outlined in the more lucid and logic responses above.

Wait until Homeland Security gets around to forcing M$ to revoke individual
licenses of Windows based on key numbers.

The malware is Microsoft's creation. It is useless to the End User, the
paying customer. That MS tricks people into installing it by calling it
a "High Priority" update clearly demonstrates that MS is no better than
the worst malware distributors. I would say it makes MS the worst of
the bunch, since they would be the largest distributors of malware.

With the multiple daily reports of this malware erroneously calling
legit software counterfeit, it is you MicroApologists that need your
heads examined.

And since no one is forcing you to use Windows, you are free to find
something that pleases you more than windows. If was really as bad as
you state, you would not be using it yourself.
