Copy of Windows not Genuine??

G

Guest

I keep getting a popup balloon that says "You may be the victim of software
counterfeiting. This copy of Windows is not genuine."

The copy of Windows XP that I am running was included with the laptop I
purchased in '04. I have the box, the disk, and everything that came with it.
Why am I getting this message? Is it a pfishing scheme...or what??

Please help. tia~

Probably a corruption of files due to a virus or some other malware removal.
Many problems with WGA which is what is giving you this pop-up have been
found. I would put your cd in the drive and click start > run > type "sfc
/scannow"(no quotes and a space between sfc and /scannow) > let it run and
have your cd ready whenever it needs to replace a file. This should help fix
the problem if not you may need to run a repair install. Good Luck and let
us know if it worked or not and we can help some more.

Thanks Kemco, but before I do that, what is "sfc/scannow" ? I have already
cleaned out the cookies, temp files, and history, as well as run a
full-system scan (McAfee). No spyware or malicious ware or viruses were
detected.

Is the sfc thing a built-in Windows or Microsoft spyware scanner? Will it
erase any of my data?

Sorry for all the questions...I am not a techy-type.

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

SFC /scannow is System File Checker. It basically looks at all your system
files and looks for any corruption of files or missing files and replaces
those with good ones. Just Windows system files will be changed by this
utility. It is not a spyware scan it is a built in windows Diagnostic tool.
You may try that link Carey gave you and see if it works first cuz SFC
/scannow takes a while but if it doesn't work then do the scan and let us
know if it helped you. Good Luck

Thanks very much. I tried the link that Carey supplied, it automatically
rebooted, and that fixed the problem. The balloon is no longer there.

Thanks for the help!:)

The OP's problem? The problem was started by Microsoft with their flawed
spyware that has who knows how many fixes like the one you posted in
this message. Why should legit users have to jump through these hoops?
Why should paying customers be FORCED to aid MS in catching thieves?

Alias, not expecting copy and paste Carey to respond because he knows I
am right!

I have a completely legit windows XP Pro, and it tells me that im the victim
as well, which really ticks me off since I had to run linux for a few months
til i could cough up all the money for xp home.

Well that's pretty lame. You spent money to move to an inferior operating
system?

Well said...since Linux is presumably "free". IOW, he might as
well should have stayed with Linux instead of spending money on
XP Pro and then possibly now be insulted by a false finding of
having a counterfeit version.

I am in exactly the same situation - definitely have genuine software - and I
would estimate I have spent at least 3 VERY valuable hours trying to get rid
of the problem. Full time worker + student. So unimpressed with Microsoft &
this underhanded way of trying to get more money out of people. How many
other MS customers have A) forked out more money when they actually did have
genuine software or B) wasted valuable time and busted keyboards or had heart
attacks over the frustration of this?!!!!! A person with known non-genuine
software is going to put up with the annoying messages... the only people who
are truly pissed off are their genuine customer base!!! I am completing a
Masters of Marketing and I am going to use this as a "what not to do" case in
my current course. I'm that PO'd I might even do a thesis on it. ;)

Thanks to Carey for the fix, I will try.

Ain't it great to be considered a thief by Microsoft when you're not one?

WPA/WGA/N will be the downfall of MS.
