The Windows XP Recording Window under CD-RW (F:) Properties has mysteriously disappeared on my computer. Can anyone tell me how to restore this window? Without this window, I am unable to "Enable CD recording on this drive" using this feature of Windows XP.

I am not certain exactly when or how this feature of Windows XP disappeared from my Windows XP system. I suspect that it happened within the past couple of months when I upgraded my CD-RW drive and its related Nero software first to an MSI CD-RW drive, and then subsequently to a SONY CD-RW drive with NTI software when the MSI drive would not work with a backup product called Backup MyPC. Somewhere in installing, uninstalling, and finally installing my SONY CD-RW drive, which uses NTI (New Tech Infosystems, Inc.) software, the Windows XP Recording Window was somehow uninstalled or removed from my computer. I subsequently discovered that this had happened when I attempted to run a special test using the CD-RW function that comes with Windows XP, only to discover that I no longer had this function.

So can anyone tell me how to restore the above Windows XP Recording Window under CD-RW (F:) Properties on my computer? Could this be as simple as fixing some undocumented Windows XP Registry entry?

Kelly:

I tried your fix, but it had no effect. The Windows XP Registry entry that I downloaded and created was as follows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoCDBurning"=dword:00000000

FYI, this entry did not exist in my Windows XP Registry prior to my making this change. When no such entry previously existed, what
was its default value?

Could it be that this is the Windows XP Registry entry that needs to be changed, but the value should be something other than
zeroes? If so, what should this value contain?

It was probably disabled by Nero - certainly if you installed InCD. The
inbuilt burning does not mix with these, and does nothing that you
cannot do better by using Nero. It does not work in the INCD manner of
a direct drag/drop to the CD at all

If you need it for a specific purpose, first disable InCD, then go to
Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services, look for IMAPI CD Burning and
click Start
