The NW721 DV Codec (Papa please Help!)

Here is my question-

The capture device I have currently uses The NW721 DV
Codec. It seems that if I don't render my videos into AVI
or .WMV that my clips pause for a second at the beginning
of transitions (whether or not there are effects applied).
However I would like to avoid rendering and just import
these MPEGS directly into MM2. Does MM2 have the
capapbility to decode these MPEG's or can I adjust the
codecs in my computer so that it will decode them
properly? Thanks in advance

Hi Jamey,

MM2 can decode MPEG2 files, depending on the codecs installed on the
computer. It's a tricky area - see the Importing Source Files... Video Clips
page of www.papajohn.org

I've never used the NW721 DV Codec. Maybe you are using Pinnacle's Studio
Movie Box.

You can register and unregister codecs, but I don't know how to make any
adjustments to them.

I use the Ligos MPEG2 decoder, which works pretty well, but I still convert
the MPEG2 files into DV-AVI or WMV and use those as my source files instead
of the MPEG2 files. Just to preclude issues down the road.

I'm still learning about this stuff. Wish I knew more.

Thanks for the input!

FYI I am using the ADS Instant DVD2.0 to capture. I've
been basically doing what you do and importing them as an
AVI or WMV, but my device captures as MPEG so I was trying
to avoid re-rendering. Everything works good until I
import as MPEG which causes the clips to freeze for a
brief second. Perhaps this isn't a codec issue but
something else? If any one else has suggestions they would
be greatly appreciated also. Thanks so much!

I was just reading about the ADS device - no-one has mentioned it in a post
yet. After reading it, I'm more convinced it's a codec issue - but I'm
always open to learning more.

The codec is already on your computer. You can use GSpot (link on Setup...
Software) to see what codecs are installed and in what files they are.

My guess is that MM2 is already using the codec to view the files, but it
doesn't work well with the codec. You might have to get another MPEG2 codec
that MM2 works better with - like the Ligos one - if you want to go down
that path. But the Ligos one would need to work well with NW721 DV encoded
files.

It would be a trial and error venture, with no guarantee of success. You
would have to decide if it's worth going down. I'm interested in what you
and others find as you work with the ADS Tech device.

It's not every day that I get to start a whole new major branch of my menu.
But I used your post to start one. It's the Digital Video Capture... branch.
At first I put the ADS Tech page under analog capture, but it's not that.
And it's not really a camcorder brand specific item. So a new branch pops
out. With USB2 and firewire, it's a new interesting area - at least new for
me.

Thanks,

PapaJohn
