"The message could not be sent"

Bev

I'm not sure what's happened to my settings on my computer in the last 3 days
but I can't send/receive emails. I have internet access working fine and
have checked my messages on webmail but can't download/receive them to my
computer. I get a windows mail pop up box when I try to send mail that says
"The message could not be sent. An error has occurred. Get help from
communities" . Please help.
Thanks

Make sure your antivirus program is not configured to scan emails.
Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.

Thanks Gary - I am running avast 4.8 home edition. If I stop anti virus
protection I still can't seem to download my mail - any other suggestions?

Stopping the mail scanning in Avast does not stop its interference.
Your Avast antivirus was probably installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

While Avast is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.

Thanks again Gary and I'm sorry to bother you but no luck. I have
uninstalled avast gone back into my email, clicked send/receive and nothing
downloaded. It ticked all the boxes to say it was done but i've got no mail.
I have spoken to my ISP and they have confirmed that all my settings are
correct as far as servers etc go and they can't help so it's obviously
something else. Any other suggestions??

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Not that I'm aware of. HOw can I double check

Not sure if this will help but I have added in my email accounts again to
Windows Mail and now also get the following error message

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.bigpond.com (5)', Server:
'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number:
0x80004005

Does that throw any light on the problem???

Try this. In your browser go to http://bigpond.com/email and log in.
Then clean out all the folders in your webmail. If you want to save
any messages, create a new folder and move those messages to the
new folder. Empty the spam and thrash folders also. Close webmail,
then try Windows Mail again.

Thanks again Gary. I have done that, deleted all my messages on webmail just
to be sure, logged out and went back into my Windows Mail. the send/receive
box now executes and two boxes get green ticks as though it has sent and
received. However if I try to send an email I am back to getting the small
pop up box that says "The message could not be sent. An error has occurred.
Get help from communities". Really sorry to bother you ...............Bev

You can't double-check unless the application is still listed in Install
Programs.

It may be worth your while to download/run both the Norton and McAfee
removal tools, Bev.

Norton Removal Tool

McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

1. Save the download to your desktop.

2. Right-click on the saved file and select "Run as Administrator"

3. Don't touch your keyboard until the run completes.

4. Reboot after running each tool.

It sounds like we've made some partial progress. The cleanup I had
you do only affects receiving (the 0x80004005 error).
Let us know if the removal of possible old antivirus remnants recommended
by PA Bear corrects the sending problem for you. If not, try this:
Delete that potentially corrupted mail account, restart Windows Mail,
then recreate that account.

Sorry Gary but I feel like I'm going round in circles! I deleted all of my
email accounts in Windows Mail (3) and re-entered the main one I use. Now
when I hit send/receive I'm back to getting the pop up box with the
0x80004005 message in it. If I try and send a message I get the other pop up
box that says - The message could not be sent - an error has occurred -
contact communities........
PS I still have not reinstalled any anti virus software either

Hi, I have a problem with the same error message. My Windows Mail generally
works ok, but at least once a day I try to send a message and it comes up
with 'the message could not be sent'. From then on, I am unable to send the
message, save it, or even look in any other folders, which temporarily become
empty, saying, 'Folder could not be displayed.Windows Mail could not open
this folder.Possible causes are: low disk space.Low memory.Windows Mail'

The only way around I have found is to copy the message I want to send,
paste it into a word document, close down the computer, restart, retrieve the
message from the word document, paste into a fresh email, then send.

Is there something I can do to stop this happening?
Thanks

Thanks for this. I did as it suggested and turned off email scanning, then
removed my email account, came out of Windows Mail, went back in, added my
account back in, but all my messages have now disappeared. How do I retrieve
them, please?

It should have no effect on the messages. Try going to View | Current View
| Show all messages.

I'm using AVG.

I've managed to retrieve my messages - turning off and on the computer meant
that it downloaded them all afresh from the server. But the problem is still
there with the error message, so I'll try your suggestions below.

Thanks,
Rachel
