I have the same situation - shutting off preview pane doesn't help. I am
using build 5728.
The only thing I can do without getting:
"An unknown error has occurred"
is to Mark Read/Unread
The message is not previewed in the preview pane:
"Message could not be displayed
Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message.
Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again."

The message is from a reliable source - Perfect Disk, Raxco Software - and
was OK for awhile
and then became corrupt.

We're on new territory here.

Try going to Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance and where it says to
compact after 100 closings, set that to 1. Then close WinMail and it should
prompt to compact and when it does say yes and let it do its thing. Then
reopen WinMail and change that value back to 100 and see then if the message
is still there and can be deleted.

I haven't tried this yet, so I guess I will in a moment.

Okay, I tried this and it didn't break anything I can tell yet. <G>

I tried it Steve, thanks for the idea, no good. I tried it twice - no good x
2 :)
I show 1 message in the Inbox - a very stubborn message.

Is there a way to delete the Inbox, then create a new one?

I went into the Maintenance section and removed/deleted anything and
everything I could.....
.......no good. I got me one stubborn message. ;-)
I d/l the software - installed it - then uninstalled it. At some point the
message went "dead"
As well as I can remember, it was after I uninstalled the software - I have
NO clue how
that could relate to the message.

I have the same problem as BChat. Has there been something worked out? New
to this discussion group, will this post be noticed or should I start a new
thread. RC1 (5600). Thanks

That doesn't seem to work for me Frank.
First, move everything you want to keep out of the Inbox to user created
folders.

Don't store messages in the Inbox. It is the folder most apt to be
corrupted. As soon as you read them move them to user created folders.
Then compact the Inbox regularly.

Go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder and write down where OE
is storing its data.
Close OE.
Go there with Windows Explorer and move (not copy) Inbox.dbx to an empty
Windows
folder. With Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3 it will be a hidden file.

You can use either of these tools to extract the messages from the old DBX
file:

DBXtract ($5): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/ although this tool is faster
and better:
DBXpress: ($25) http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx
Do NOT extract to the desktop!
With a large file this can take a long time, so let it keep running.

The messages can be dragged from a Windows folder back into an OE folder in
OE's Folder List.

Same problem here but the suggested solution did not work. Operating on
Vista. Any other ideas

No real solution for now. Either ignore the error messages until
such time as Microsoft comes out with a patch, or else if it
bothers you too much, switch to an alternate email program.

Ignore the error message for now.
Microsoft is working on a fix.
