just installed wd b2. neither the autodownload or the manual download will
install the latest spyware definition. the automatic update just fails with
no error message. the manual update says the installation was successful but
when i check the definition it's the original again no error message. check
the logs in mmc. the errors were not in ms's database. tried suggestions in
kb 822798 without success.
tried 4 other programs to see in there were any viruses or other malware.
none detected. does anyone have a suggestion ?

Hello Mike,

Let start here:
http://update.microsoft.com Ask for Critical Updates
What happen? Any messages?

Then: Event log.
Start > Run > type "eventvwr.msc", hit "OK"
Windows Defender is logged in the "System" log.

OR, alternatively: Start>control panel>Performance and
aintenance>Administrative Tools>event viewer>system.

If you see WinDefend, you can right click on the entry to see more
information.

If there are errors visible, you can click on a link within the info box and
Windows Explorer will connect with the Mircrosoft knowledge base if you are
connected to the Internet. It does not explain everything, but I have learned
some interesting information by investigating error entries.

Follow the prompts, and save the report. (In case we need info)

I hope your return with good news ;-)

Please try going to Windows Update and choosing a custom scan and see if you
can get it there.

Sorry about the previous blank post.

Event viewer shows the update successfully installed---but it's not. I have
tried the update site scan and attempted to update from there as well. By
any method, I am told the update was successful but it's not installed and I
continue to get the system tray notification.

Bill - this is the exact thing that happens to me each and every time for
some reason. I finally gave up and uninstalled Defender - as it really
frustrating and I could find no way to correct it. I am just waiting until
they indicate you can download Defender and update it properly without being
put into loops with no success.

John,

I tried all the suggestions I could find in this forum, including trying to
delete the defs. file (which wouldn't delete.) I finally uninstalled the
entire application, downloaded a new copy and installed it. It came with a
definitions file of some time back in January but it updated properly when
requested. I don't think it was a bad first installation because it had
downloaded previous updates without any problem. Anyway, download a new copy
of the app and it should update properly.
