Microsoft is proud to announce that the final name for Microsoft's Windows
AntiSpyware technology will be Windows® Defender. We believe the name more
accurately describes the protection that we offer to our customers against
spyware and other potentially unwated software and describes it in a more
positive way. We expect Windows® Defender to be included in an upcoming
release of Windows Vista. The engineering team has also been making progress
towards the new signature distribution infrastructure. Windows® Defender
will receive signature updates through the Windows Update infrastructure and
will start appearing on Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) consoles
shortly. The two new additions will be "Definition Updates" in the
classifications and "Windows Defender" in the product categories.

For additional information and relevant discussion on Windows Defender and
other Microsoft anti-malware technologies, please visit the anti-malware
engineering team blog at http://blogs.technet.com/antimalware.

Thanks,
Mike Chan

Well at least people won't be referring to it as "Microsoft Spyware".

After careful consideration, I vote for WinD

WD= Washer & Drier, War Department, Walt Disney ;)

Thanks Mike--it'll be easier to type, anyway, and I agree--more positive.

It would probably allay some fears here if you mentioned the free client
that will be available for the older Windows versions--I assume that will
carry the same name, and get definitions the same way?

Almost there. This is a good sign, I was beginning to get a little worried.

BETA is just around the corner then, oooh-weee! :)

The article mentions Vista and XP but not W2K. I do hope that was an
inadvertent omission.

Maybe this will put your mind to ease a bit... Pardon the German to English
machine translation, my German never got past a few choice swear words:

Then by the end of the year Windows Defender Beta2 should be offered to the
download, therefore the 18 million users of the Beta1 can also protect
themselves in future from Spyware. Windows ® Defender will be also available
after the beta phase as a free download for Windows to server in 2003, Windows
XP and Windows 2000. Further Windows ® Defender becomes a steady component of
Windows ® Vista.

Many thanks, Dave.

It's unfortunate that a Google search finds only the shareware by the same
name.

I'm open to suggestions on how to differentiate the two programs.<g>
