Q: [1] ccan you tell us moer about windows defender & any eta?

A: We’re continuing development of Windows Defender (formerly Windows
AntiSpyware) beta 2 for Windows XP and building it into Windows Vista. It
will appear in the next Windows Vista CTP build. We expect the XP beta 2
version in the first half of 2006. You can follow progress on the new
antimalware blog at <http://blogs.technet.com/antimalware/>;.

Q: [16] will windows defender be avaliabel for all versions of windows past
& present?

A: We are still in the process of evaluating what platforms Windows Defender
will finally support, but at the least it will run on Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003. As you know, Windows Defender will also be included with
Windows Vista.

That is not a good news..
Firstly - MS leaves Win2k behind, secondly - first half of 2006 for beta 2
for XP? There are so many antispyware solutions, they will loose the
market, I'm affraid.. Comparing to the previous information that it will
appear at the end of this year - it is really strange (to use polite
words).

I've got to go back and get to the whole transcript at some point--there's a
bit more.

I'm not sure what to say about Windows 2000. It's off mainstream support,
if I understand the charts properly. My guess is that it will work but not
be supported (?)--but that's a pretty uninformed guess.....

They are going to be behind the competition, I'm afraid--and the beta1
product is already looking ragged around the edges in some comparisons with
more newly engineered products.

My question is: how much is it going to cost us poor slobs out here? I can't
afford to pay a lot for a program right now. I'm running one program that I
already pay for and I haven't found a free antispyware/malware program that
works all that well. And will it work for XP SP1?

Nancy... Christmas comes in the first half of 2006 for you. Defender is just a
new name for MSAS Beta2...

From Steve Dodson:
As we have been saying since day one, Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware will be
available at no charge to licensed users of Windows. Users who validate their
Windows install through WGA will be allowed to download the AntiSpyware beta, as
well as the full standalone version of AntiSpyware when it releases to the web.
This has not changed since Bill Gates announced this information at the RSA
conference in February. The enterprise version of Windows AntiSpyware is
targeted to companies who want to centrally manage their Windows AntiSpyware
infrastructure. The enterprise version of Windows AntiSpyware will be available
for a cost (which has not been determined yet). For users who want more
services including AntiVirus, computer backup, and AntiSpyware we will be
offering Windows OneCare live. Windows OneCare Live is currently in beta, but
when it releases to the web it will be available to users with a cost.

I'll let someone else comment on XP SP/1... cause I don't know actually, but
they didn't say XP SP/2 or SP/3 specifically... just XP. Hope you manage to
upgrade soon, it's highly recommended if you can.

I expect it to work with XP SP1, but I can't be certain.

If your reasons for not going to SP2 are technical and curable, I'd strongly
advise you to get help through a newsgroup like this one--Except in
corporate settings where a particular SP ceiling may be mandated by policy,
you should be able to upgrade.

My reason for not upgrading to SP2 is partially due to worries over not
being able to access sites that I normally access and not being able to
access the net from a networked computer (home network). I have enough
headaches with things not working properly now. I also use a dynamic IP
program to run a website part time from my home computer --- and I've heard
that SP2 makes that difficult if not impossible.

I think ever one of those fears is baseless. I don't run a website at home,
but I am typing this message and sending it from my home machine, controlled
via Remote Desktop, from a site miles away. And I'm on dynamic IP, and
using a DYNDNS tool.

The SP2 firewall, like the original XP firewall, does nothing to interdict
outbound traffic. It can be opened for inbound traffic (your webserver)
just as the original XP firewall could.

IF SP2 affected the ability to reach specific web sites, or anything on the
Internet from a home machine, nobody would install it.

Really--none of that should happen.

If you put it in, and you have those problems or others--write me at:

(e-mail address removed) and I'll make sure you get the issues solved.

Or--for that matter, you can call Microsoft at 1-866-pcsafety if SP2 causes
problems for you.
