My event viewer System log is show lots of sporadic errors.
Type: Error, Event Id: 7, Decsription:
The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.

Since this is the harbinger of impemending disk failure (as confirmed
by failing Maxtor PowerMax 4.21 quick test) I am prepared to purchase a
replacement harddisk.

The plan is to replace a Maxtor 6E040L0 (40g) with a Deskstar 7K250
(160g).

The current system continues to boot and run its programs seemingly
normally, so the question is:
- Should/Can I image copy the current system to the new disk and boot
normally?
- What is the best program for moving an old disk (OS and all) to a new
disk { this is imaging, right ?} ?

I don't want to start with a reinstall of my OEM XP SP1 on the new
disk, especially since I'm on a modem and SP2 would take short of
forever to reinstall.

I would image the drive for posterity, and clone the drive to another drive.
No, imaging and cloning are not the same.

It may be possible to remap the bad area of the hard drive so its not used
without affecting XP.

You can get a copy of XP SP2 from ms on CD. You don't have to download it.
Most people find it takes about week to arrive vice the time period
allowance ms claims for shipping.

Turn off the computer and go buy your new hard drive now. If you get it
retail, the new drive will come with software that will copy the old
drive to the new one. Just follow the instructions.

The new drive should come with software to copy the old drive to the
new. Follow the directions exactly. Once copied remove the old drive,
and boot only with the new drive in the system. If the new drive
doesn't have the software with it download it from the drive
manufacturer's web site. I would suggest you do this asap. You don't
know when the old drive may fail and then you won't be able to copy it.
