task scheduler service not started.

i have" windows 2000 version 5.00.2195 service pack 4 " installed on my
server. we wish to run certain batch files as scheduled tasks but the task
scheduler service status is starting but it should be started. i have tried
changing service to manual and then tried restarting server and then tried to
restart service but it gives an error "1053 The service did not respond to
the start or control request in a timely fashion". I have checked the
dependency service RPC(remote procedure call), that's also running.

can anyone pls help me out with this.

You might try;
sc query "Schedule"

to see what win32 exit code is generated. You can get sc.exe (service
controller tool) here.
