What do you mean "disappeared"? You mean it won't run? The first thing to do
is make sure the computer is virus/malware-free since not being able to run
Task Manager is a common symptom of infection. Do the scanning and then post
back with the results.

Repost with details e.g. how do you usually
start Task Manager (default = right click on taskbar
and select from menu) and what happens ? Have you
followed routines in / Start / Help / "task manager" ?

Thanks for your reply.

By disappeared I mean it just won't run.

I've run Vipre,Malbytes. Spybot search & destroy and CCleaner. The results
showed 3 minor infections which I removed and then rebooted twice.

I checked C:\Windows\system32\Taskmgr.exe and it wasn't there. All I could
see was a file called Taskmgr.backup.

Does this info help?

I've tried to access Task Mgr the usual way as well as the way you suggested
above with no success.

I checked the windows directory system32 and found only taskmgr.backup.

Where can I get a replacement for the missing file?

If nobody else replies, right mouse click on taskmgr.backup and select
properties. Is it taskmanager renamed from a .exe to a .backup?

I have a taskmgr.exe but I don't have a taskmgr.backup in
C:\Windows\system32

I've got in the habit, when the problem was just recovering
one file, of getting it out of my last sufficiently-good
Acronis True Image backup (and opening the backup
also shows me the important matter of where the file
used to be and should be restored do).

What do you back up with?

I also use ATI.

I've solved the problem. I went into 1386 which is the backup of sp3 which I
have in a safety folder. I found a copy of "TaskMgr.exe" there and copied it
to System32 which is where Task Manager should be. Then I called for it and
it came.

So problem solved.

I thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Best regards,

Werner

I wouldn't get all excited yet.

If taskmgr.exe was not in the windows\system32 folder where is it
supposed to be, you may still have problems.

That is one of many things the the Windows File Protection is supposed
to fix for you. Of course WFP must be enabled.

If you delete taskmgr.exe on a healthy system, it should be replaced
with a copy from the system32\dllcache folder. You don't have to do
it manually.

The taskmgr.exe file should not have been missing in the first
place.
There should be no reason to manually copy taskmgr.exe from someplace
else.
An explanation of the taskmgr.backup file should be addressed.

If these are your symptoms, you need to make sure it is fixed. You
know something happened to taskmgr.exe. Who know what other files are
missing?

I would think that MBAM would have the best chance of cleaning
malicious software (you did not say if it fixed anything), but if WFP
is not working, you still have a problem.

At least see if your WFP is working now.

Delete the taskmgr.exe file - it should be replaced in a few seconds.
It it is not replaced, your system is broken or WFC has been disabled.

Thank you for your kind and insightful comments.

I had a problem in installing Acronis True Image Home for several days. The
problem holding it back was a very small program that I run in the
background and forgot about. When installing ATI I was finally told by
someone that it can only be installed successfully when all programs are
closed down. This included my AV program and firewall.

This led to my being attacked by some malware, viruses and Trojans . One of
these kills off the Task Manager and I received instructions on how to
restore it. That worked.

So I've got it back and I learned a lot from the experience.

I thank you for your help as well.

Regards,
