task manager only flashes on screen

Hi,
Am new to win 2000 pro, and after the clean install task
manager seemed to work fine, after aplying all the
critical updates am now unable to use task manager.
ctrl+alt+del them click on task manager and it just
flashes onto the screen for about 0.2 of a second and is
then gone. am also having problems running exe files and
auto running disks as the egg timer comes on for a couple
of seconds and then nothing else happens? would appriciate
any advice, but don't realy wan't to redo my sp4
instalation as it took around 3 hours to unpackage the
1000+ files during the instalation!!!! Many thanks for any
help.

The type of behavior you describe, which also often applies to
Taskmgr.exe and MSConfig.exe, is typical behavior of more than one
virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.
