Task Manager wont stay open

I have a W2k laptop with sp4. When I ctrl-alt-del and
then select task manager, nothing happens. I simply
return to the desktop as if nothing happened. I have
scanned the laptop for virus's with Panda, McAfee, and
Norton online scan tools as well as a full local
installation/scan using McAfee with the latest DAT file.
Is there anything else I can try before I reinstall W2k?

Just to be thorough try running it manually by doing Start -> Run ->
TASKMGR. I suspect that will fail as well but I'd be curious if that
worked. The next thing to do would be to boot in safe mode and see if you
can run it then. To do this just hold down the F8 key after the system
POSTs and you'll see a boot menu with this option. If it does boot in safe
mode then something is loading on startup that is causing the problem.

I was successful in opening up the task manager when
doing Start->Run->TASKMGR. Yey! I looked through
the "Run" key in the registry and there is nothing in
there that is out of the ordinary. Any ideas?
