%SystemDrive%

Hi,

I was checking some information on my computer, I am sorry, but cannot
recollect what I was doing now. I was asked to log off my computer. When I
logged back on, I noticed a folder titled "%SystemDrive%" appear on my
Desktop.

The complete structure is as follows, if I click on the folder from the
Desktop.

C:\Documents and Settings\**User Name**\Desktop\%SystemDrive%\Documents and
Settings\**User Name**\
Application Data\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My

Then there are 3 folder titled:

Certificates
CRLs
CTLs

When I click on them, there are all empty. I do have "Show hidden files and
folders" selected.

My question is what is this folder-how could have it appeared, is it
possible to delete this safely?

Greg.

%SystemDrive% is the reference to C:\Windows, or wherever it is you have
Windows installed.

Hi,

Thanks for this. Should I move this folder to the Windows folder, which I
have in my C drive? I would prefer to remove it from the Desktop anyway,
but wondered where it is safe to move it to?

Greg.

Hi

I don't know if it will help moving that folder, especially if it holds
Certificates. %systemdrive% refers to the drive letter where Windows is
installed. %systemroot% refers to the Windows folder itself.

Ok thanks for that, but prior to the folder appearing on the desktop the
last couple of days, my computer was and still is working ok. Therefore,
why would the folder suddenly "move" to the desktop?

Are you saying moving this folder is not advisable?

Thanks

Greg

Hi

I don't know how it was created, but if it isn't causing any trouble, I
would be inclined to leave it where it is for the moment. Can you recall
why you were asked to log off/on?

On my computer this folder also appeared on Desktop, but I DO have a quite serious problem. This started to happen about 3 weeks ago. When I try to run any ActiveX control, it says me that control have damaged signature and that Windows has blocked this control. It does not ask me to install ActiveX control or not - there is only "OK" button. Similar situation is when I'm trying to install Windows Media Player 10 or security updates. On WMP10 it says me, that this programme hasn't passed Windows XP compatibility tests and installation is blocked. When I try to install security update (KBxxxxxx) it says me that it was unable to check signatures and I should check if Cryptographic Services are running (but they are). Also I can't access Windows Update - it returns error 0x80096001. Also I can't access any web pages with secure connention (such as http://gmail.com/) with Internet Explorer (on Mozilla Firefox they are opening fine) - it returns error "Unable to open web page". I tried to rename this folder, but there are still the same problems. "sfc /scannow" also doesn't work - it doesn't read any files from CD and in System Event Log on Computer Managment console there are thoustands errors 0x00000490 saying 'there was unable to copy file xxxxxxxx.xxx'.
I'm not posting screenshots or exact content of errors, because I don't have English language version of Windows XP.
Anyone have any suggestions for resolving it?

SystemCertificates

I'm not getting the %SystemDrive% folder, but I've got copies of %USERPROFILE% appearing all over my PC. This folder contains:

C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name Here>\%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft

C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name Here>\%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My

Note the similarity to the other posters regarding the SystemCertificates problem. The system works normally, but the folders seem to appear when one particular user double-clicks a Microsoft document or just opens MS Word 2003. A potential contributing factor is that all the users are sharing the My Documents folder: No shortcuts, I modified the registry (I think) years ago so that all members of my family share the All Users My Documents folder. But only one user account exhibits this problem.

What's going on? For what are the SystemCertificates used anyway?
