System32 unexpectedly terminates

I am running windows xp home edition on a Sony viao laptop. Everytime that I
start it up it gives me an error message that reads "The system process
C:\\Windows\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code
565680. The system will now shutdown and restart." I don't if this is a virus
or a software problem. any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Hi MikeB,
Try to start in Safe Mode by taping the F8 untill you get the options for
boot up and select Safe Mode.
In Safe Mode do a full scan for Viruses and malwares, then look in the Event
Viewer for anu Error Messages (X) and double click on it to get more info
about the culprit of the Error message, you can post it here or search on msn
for it.
If you start in Normal mode and get the same message then open a run command
and type this:
shutdown -a click [OK] this will give you about 60 secs then open the Run
command again and type:
msconfig click [OK] and there on the system Config window click Startup Tab
and uncheck the unncessary Apps/Programs and start with clean Boot.
Reboot the machine and see if you will get the Error, if not then Try to
Enable the Apps/Programs on the Startup one-by-one and see the culprit and
terminate it or reinstall it if you need it or look for update for it.
If still no joy!, open the run command and type:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and get your XP CD handy to insert it in if it
asked you to do so: sfc (System File Checker).
P.S did you install/Uninstall any Apps/Programs recently! just curious to
know.
HTH.
Please let us know.
Regs,
nass
