Can anyone explain how I get the system tray to slide hidding the icons. At
the moment all the icons show and I cannot remember how to get the arrows
next to it?

I have searched help but it does not return a method how to achieve this.

Right Click the Start Button

Select "Properties"

Select the "Task Bar" tab then "Customise" button.

Select the behavour you want in the right hand panel corresponding to
the Sys Tray Icon on the left.

If you set the icons you don't want to see in the sys tray to "Always
Hide" you will get the arrow back in the sys tray as you want.

Hows that?

You do not have to click on 'customize', just click on the box for 'hide
inactive icons'.
Right click anywhere on the task bar then 'properties', then hide inactive
icons.

To get the chevrons, drag the system tray marker to a small
size window.

Hi Jonah,
Thanks for your functional reply.
I followed the link that Carey posted, and it jogged my memory.
When I changed the items to "always hide" the cheverons reappeared.
The cheverons remained when I returned the settings to "Hide when active".

Thanks for the reply Sparks.

I am not sure what you mean here. Click on what box? I have tried both right
/ left clicking on the icons in the "System Tray" but this only opens the
item or produces a small menu, which does not have the "Hide Active Icons"
option you mentioned, the nearest option being "Customise Notifications".

Right click anywhere on the task bar then 'properties', then hide inactive

Right clicking anywhere on the taskbar gives the ususal menu with options
like "Tile Windows vertically" etc, but no option for "Hide Active Icons".

The above findings may be to do with the way I have my computer configured
to the "Classic" appearance.......any other information would be appreciated
as i know there can be several ways to do things and some of the simplest are
always overlooked.
Thanks again

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your reply.
I have tried Right / Left Clicking and dragging the "System Tray" as you
suggested, but can't get anything to happen. I am not too sure what you mean
by "The System Tray MARKER"......I wouls be interested to understand what you
mean, as often the most simplest alternatives are overlooked.
Thanks

Are you positive you are clicking on the taskbar and not the desktop. I have
the 'classic' view also and when i click on the desktop I get the properties
you mentioned. "Themes, desktop, settings, etc." Clicking the taskbar gives
you "toolbars, adjust time/date, and the very bottom is 'properties' which
when clicked gives you "lock the taskbar, auto hide, etc and on the very
bottom is "hide inactive icons." I probably am not explaining very well.
Sorry about that. Gary

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the reply.
I don't know what I was thinking about earlier, but I misunderstood your
posting.
I had alread viewed the "TaskBar and Startup Properties" from the taskbar
right click context menu you described, but it had not resolved the problem
for me.

What did resolve it was when I set all the notifications to "Always Hide",
the cheverons reappeared. Then I returned the settings to "Hide When Active"
and the problem did not occur again as the cheverons remained and the "System
Tray" now slides to hide the icons.

I looked in the notifications because Carey had posted a link in a previous
posting above, otherwise I was lost.
Thanks again for your reply.

Hmmmmm, when I right click on the task bar and click on properties I see a
'hide inactive icons' and that's what I used. Do I understand it right that
you now have it the way you want it? Gary

Hi Gary,
I have recovered the sliding "System Tray" which was the object of my
initial posting.

However, your comment about the taskbar context menu interested me.
I do not have the "Hide Inactive Icons" on the context menu that appears
when I right click on the taskbar.

Here is a list of the items on my menu, from the top down:-
Toolbars | Cascade Windows | Tile Windows Horizontally |Tile Windows
Vertically |Show Desktop | Task Manager | Lock Taskbar | Properties

I have tried to find out if there is a way to customise this menu, it may be
that "Hide Inactive Icons" is an option I can add to it.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Ah HA, I see the same thing and when I do I click on 'properties'. I betya
it works. I right click on properties and i see things like 'lock the
taskbar, show clock, hide taskbar, and on the very bottom is 'hide inactive
icons.' Gary
