System sounds gone after windows update

D

Dirk

Hello,

I use W2K SP4 and recently performed a windows update. After that all
the system-sounds (Ding, Systemstart, Systemshutdown...) were gone,
the PC-speaker beeps instead. All other sounds work properly. Even if
I test the sounds in controlpanel/sounds I can hear them.

It's not the microsoft registry thing (knowledge-base #262256) and it
is NOT user-specific.

When I deactivate and activate (without booting) the sound-card-driver
(SB LIVE WAVE, newest version) in device-manager, the system sounds
work until the next reboot.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It looks like you might have a compatibility issue with your sound drivers
and SP4. I would start by checking the vendor website for an update.

I had the same issue after recent update and am using most current driver.

Roll back your sound card drivers and never download hardware driver
updates from M$ again, just stick to the critical security updates.
