System sounds and KB835732

I recently used Windows Update to install several critical
security updates including KB835732.

Problem 1:
After update, several of the system sounds including
startup music stopped functioning and were replaced by
beeps from the small speaker inside my computer tower.
Adjusting the chosen sounds from control panel had no
effect.

Problem2:
Many known file extension such as .htm, .aspx, .asp were
reset so that the associated program could not find them.
Once I used "open with" and checked the always use this
program checkbox, Windows said it could not find the .exe
file pointed to by the registry. The only way to fix this
was to browse for the .exe.

Problem3:
Visual Studio .Net started refusing to save changes to
ASP.Net files in the IDE editor. I would edit a file
visually in Flow Mode and then next time I opened the
file, the changes were forgotten. To a worse end,
switching between layout view and html view would also
forget all changes even after save.

FIX:
After looking at this newsgroup, I uninstalled KB835732
and all problems vanished.

I simply can't believe the level of incompetence it takes
to pop up an icon on Americas computers advising a
critical update that causes this many problems. The
project manager for this hotfix should be fired.

Clegg,
Thanks for posting this.

I have a Win2K system that stopped playing the stratup music, etc. and
also beeped through the PC speaker instead of through the sound card.

After trying a couple fixes, I stumbled across your post in Google
groups. I removed that patch a voila! My sounds work again.

Thanks.
