System restore "locked"?

Problem may be related to a possible virus, the problem started with shut
down, instead of normal shut down, it would restart, system shuts down
manually o.k.. so i figured i could do a simple restore, but i cannot go
back, when clicking on direction icons, they highlight but no response.
Re-installed norton internet sec., disabled SR, re-boot, enabled, re-boot.
Problem still there......HELP! Thanks.
