System Restore Issue

Every five or six days System Restore "drops" all my restore points and
leaves me with only "The most recent restore point". Having checked in
the Event Viewer I have found the error to be,

"Event-ID:1
Source: sr
The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC0000056'
while processing the file 'A.HoverSna .. Saver.lnk' on the volume
'HarddiskVolume1'. It has stopped monitoring the volume."

The only difference between the errors is a different file name that is
causing the error.

Microsoft provide a hotfix for a near identical error (below), the only
difference being the last two digits, theirs end 0d, mine ends 56.

"Event-ID: 1
Source: SR
Symbolicname: EVMSG_DISABLED VOLUME
Description: "The systemrestore filter encountered the unexpected error
0xc000000d while processing the file file_name on the Volume
volume_name. It has stopped monitoring the volume."
RESOLUTION
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only
intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only
apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This
hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not
severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the
next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix."

Would this hotfix fix my problem? Or any other advice or tips to sort
out this issue would be appreciated.

Hi Bert,

Thanks for responding.

I have set System Restore to stop monitoring my E drive as per your
instructions.

Capacity 111.78Gb
Free space 98.90Gb
% free 88%

Does Windows Explorer have a problem measuring free space where there
are compressed files? Does it take into the reported size or size on
disk?

Hi Mike,

The C: drive looks good. Is the E: drive a recovery partition by chance?

Hi Bert,

I don't know what a recovery partition is!

My E drive is a separate, additional 40Gb hard drive that I had put in,
and is used solely for backing up my data.

Hi Bert,

I don't know what a recovery partition is!

A recovery partition is a area on the disk that contains the recovery
files for restoring the system to it's original state as it was when the
system was purchased. OEM's such as HP and Compaq do this rather than
supplying CD's with the system. Monitoring these partitions often causes
problems with System Restore.
My E drive is a separate, additional 40Gb hard drive that I had put
in, and is used solely for backing up my data.

I suspect the E: drive was the origin of the problem.

Check the System Restore calendar each day to make sure restore points
are being created and retained.

Each month test System Restore to make sure it is functioning correctly.
Create a new restore point named TEST.
Create a new folder in the desktop an name it TEST.
Now restore to the Test restore point.
You will receive a message if the restore was successful.
