System Recovery Errors / Drive Fitness Test?

Hi! Could someone please give me a hand with this? I'm using an HP533W
computer that runs WindowsXp home edition, & recently found, that I had many
viruses on it as well as spyware. Windows became unstable even with removal
of viruses & spyware, so I backed up my files {thankful that I was able to do
so} and started system recovery, with the disks that came with the computer
when it was new. I've had to do this before.

This time it rebooted itself during disc 1. It had me press R for recovery
again and then proceeded as normal. It got to disc 4 and gave me the
infamous "blue screen with white letters" saying windows had been shut down
to protect my computer {or some such wording} It gave me a bunch of numbers
and letters which I wrote down. {Can post here if needed}. It went through
the rest of the system recovery discs , 8 in total, and then asked for disk 4
again. It went through about 45 more minutes of "Recovering Windows XP and
application files" where I got several "insufficient memory" pop ups.
Anyways it got through with that, asked me to reboot and when I did so, it
gave me a black screen with white letters saying Windows couldn't boot
because it's missing *********.dll file. {I didn't write down the file name,
pretty sure it was a .dll though.}

I am trying System Recovery again. This time it didn't reboot during disk
1. However it did give me that blue screen/white letters message again.
During disc 4. It's in the process of "Recovering Windows XP and application
files". Again.

Also: I've heard of this "Drive Fitness Test" available from Microsoft? I
was told to go to support.microsoft.com & search for "drive Fitness Test"
which should be available as a download. I couldn't find it. Could someone
help?

Thank you so much in advance.

God Bless all of you!

Oh, I meant to say that disc 4 {or any of the disks} don't seem to have any
scratches. Thanks!

I never heard of Drive fitness test on Microsoft, unless you mean the
Liveonecare tune up scan?.
Please send any error messages you get (the exact message/wording) in your
next Post.
Which you could try is download the diagnostic tools from your Hard drive
manufacturer web site and test the HDD health.
Did you get rid off the Virus/malware completely or they still on the Boot
sector, for example Boost sector Virus lurking and causing all trouble for
the recovery.
HTH.

Hi Nass,

Thanks for the reply! I actually "made it" the second time through with the
recovery discs. {yay!}

I believe the virus is completley off the machine....... {to be honest this
was discovered when a Best Buy "Geek Squad" agent was here to do wireless
networking, seemed like he brought with the big-gun anti-virus software from
Best Buy & said that the virus was gone but it had messed up Windows {thus
the recovery}.

He;s who told me of the "Drive Fitness Test". Maybe he meant the
Liveonecare tuneup scan you mentioned.

To ask a "beginner" question: where do I find the company that made the hard
drive?

Thanks so much!

Using Windows Explorer, go to "My Computer"
Right Click on the drive icon.
Select "Properties"
Select the "Hardware" tab
You will see a list of drives with the one which you selected highlighted.

In the future, use on the manufacturer's drive diagnostics and only download
from their site.

You are welcome. Many, if not all, of us were not born knowing much about
computers...
