System files damaged?

I was trying a fax program and had some difficulty so I removed it and
reinstalled it. After re-installing the program, I got a different error.
I contacted the manufacturer (FaxTalk) and they said the error was a
non-specific error code (7) which indicated that a needed windows system
file was damaged. They also said that some of the cracks that are available
on the internet cause windows system file damage. They claim I'd have to
reformat my hard drive to eliminate the error and try their software.

I don't believe that it is a windows file gone awry, but I do remember some
command in WindowsXP that I can run to check the files for changes. Can
someone tell me what that program is?

Hi

From Start>Run type

sfc /scannow

which will check the system files on your PC and replace any as needed. You
will need to have your XP CD to hand.

I ran sfc /scannow and the computer asked for my Windows XP Professional CD,
but my computer is running XP Home and the program will not continue.

Hi

Try this:

Have a look in Windows Explorer for a folder named i386. When asked for the
CD, point to that folder instead.
