My wifes computer recently started showing many of her jpg's all distorted
and colors in wierd patterns. She is also getting error messages when she
tries to open MS Office Word or publisher files that the file is damaged or
corrupt. She has XP SP2 with MS Office 2007. Everything has been on the
computer for months and this just recently did this. I tried opening the
files on my computer and it does the same thing. She currently has Windows
Live One Care for protection and it is always kept up to date. Any similar
problems or idea of what is causing this. Not all pictures are damage but
many are.

Your hard drive may be failing, so you should back up all your files on
DVD-R immediately. After that you can try some diagnostic software to see
what is wrong.

It's a Seagate PATA 100 EIDE 160GB only 3 months old. I ran both Seagate
tests the long and the short and it checked OK. Is there something else I
can try? I back it up weekly automatically through Live One Care onto an
extra drive on another computer. I can send an e-mail with a photo so you
can see what's happening to them. I think I have them backed up on my other
drive from when I built this system for my wife 3 months ago. I did a sfc
/scannow and also checked everything with 2 other utulity programs. It is
still doing the same thing.

Just a WAG here. What colour depth is you video driver set too?

If it's something silly like 256 colours, then your jpgs will have
distorted colours.

It should be set to the highest your video can support. 24 bits or 32
bits.

If that's OK, then just ignore my rambling.

Good luck.
