system file checker

I ran this up the flagpole in the customise group but no one has
saluted.

I have customised my computer, since my xp installation,
by adding another hard drive.

System file checker is now "broken" - I have tried to tell
it where the I386 files are now located but I haven't been
able to make myself understood.

I placed the folder into c:\windows\options and now it's
full pathname is c:\windows\options\I386. This did not
help and it still asks for the CD, though putting in the
CD does not help since the drive letters are now changed.

Is there a reasonable way to fix sfc or should I just give
up?

Sounds like you need to edit the registry and find all instances of where
the I386 was before and change them to where it is now.

Yeh, I did that and now it works until it wants something from SP2 -
it asks for the SP2 CD and of course I don't have one. I checked the
registry entry and the entry for the ServicePackFilesPath was correct
but it still doesn't work.

I also had a registry key for ServicePackCachePath but I didn't have a
folder where it thought I should. In fact I don't have a
ServicePackCache folder anywhere on my C: drive.

You can reassign the drive letter to the CD and second hard drive (ie swap
them round).

Right click on My Computer, select Manage, on the following screen, select
Disk Management. They should appear on the right hand side of the screen
and you can reassign D to the CD drive and E to the secondary hard drive.

I was aware of that but didn't want to and the registry fix was better
for me, and it worked; however, there is no way to change a drive
letter for a CD that you don't have and that is my current problem -
even though it is a small one now.

Now sfc can not find the sp2 files, or it can't find two of them, that
it wants. The registry is pointing to the right folder. It also points
to a servicepackcache that I don't have and don't know where to get.

You can change the drive letter of an optical drive. It's exactly the same
method as changing the drive letter of a hard drive. Disk Management is your
friend.

check out Registry Settings for Windows File Protection

last Note in the article talking about SourcePath
