Does System File Checker write a log file to the hard drive?

I ran the System File Checker on my XP system by typing 'sfc /scannow'
in the Run box

After inserting the requested XP CD I patiently waited for the program
to do its thing. After it was finished, the program box just disappeared
without so much as a goodbye kiss.

I was kinda hoping for some pillow talk. Did System File Checker leave a
goodbye note somewhere on my HD?

Thanks,
Jack

System File Checker only displays dialog boxes if it has an error with
locating the original installation files or needs to restore anything.

If it exists with no problems it could have only reported : Nothing was out
of place!

The reason it does not display any boxes on exit when no corrupt files were
found, is because it was designed to be able to run at system startup.

If it stopped to display dialog boxes, it would unnecessarily halt the boot
process.

Have you not tried the obvious and opened the Event Log?

type : eventvwr.msc into the "Run" box on the Start Menu and look under
the "System" section.

It will be logged as "Information" when it starts and exists and as "Error"
if it came across a corrupt file or could not locate the original
installation files.

Typo [line 4] of my last reply ;

Should have read "EXITS" for "exists"

I opened the Event Viewer before posting, if that's what you are
referring to. There was only a record of "Windows File Protection file
scan completed successfully" in the System section, but nothing about
what was found.

Your explanation of how the app works coincides with what I was able to
glean from further investigation

Thanks

"The danger to America is not George W Bush, but a citizenry capable of
entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be easier to
limit and undo the follies of a George W Bush presidency than to restore
the necessary common sense and good judgment to an electorate willing to
have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far
more serious than Mr. George W Bush, who is a mere symptom of what ails
us. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast
confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The republic can
survive a George W Bush. It is less likely to survive a multitude of
fools such as those who made him their president."

"Windows File Protection scan" is what it's called, as [SFC.EXE] forms a
part of it.

Like I said ; if all is well, then the Event Log (via Event Viewer) is
going to state that the scan was started and that the scan finished....

Only in the event OF an event, such as encountering a corrupt file that
needed replacing, would you see intervening [red-iconned] "Error" items in
the log for the application.
