Does XP have Win98 type "system file checker" ???

Dean King

I've bee using XP Home about two months .. and I'm still a SEMI-newbie.

I'm trying to find somethig in XP similar to Win98-SE "system file checker".
...

The reason I want to "check" and "refresh" system files.. without having to
do a radical "roll-back" or "system restore".. to some ( unknown ) previous
state:

After numerous "skirmishes" with web pop-ups, adware, spyware.. etc.. I have
begun to notice some intermittant "weirdness".... like occasional browser
"laziness".. and sometimes temporary display "freeze-ups".. and .. sometimes
arbitray system "re-boots" .. etc.

I'm running a pop-up blocker .. but some of the nuisance trash on the web is
really stubborn. And it seems reasonable that occasionally some system
files ( dlls, vxds , etc ).. could get a little "skinned-up" in the process
of having to "fight" to get loose from some of the more persistant "garbage"
on encounters out on the "wild-weird-web" these days.

Sooo.. doesn't XP Home have some sort of "system file checker" .. that is
not as traumatic as having to do a ( radical ) "roll-back" .. so installed
and tediously configured applications... don't wipped out.. as can be the
case when XP's ( radical ) "system restore".reverts back to previous
"healthy" system state.

Hi Dean,

System File Checker (Start/Run/CMD/SFC /Scannow)

/SCANNOW
Scans all protected system files immediately.
/SCANONCE
Scans all protected system files at the next boot.
/SCANBOOT
Scans all protected system files at every boot.
/REVERT
Windows XP: Return to default settings.

Have the CD in the drive, exit autorun, then go to Start - Run and run

SFC /SCANNOW

One function SFC had in 98 is taken over by the much more stringent
Windows File Protection (WFP) - if something unofficially replaces or
deletes system components, they will be restored from a cache within
seconds

Kelly and Alex..

Thanks .. SEC /scannow seems to work fine..

But the various "issues" I had were "intermittant"...
so.. I guess I won't know for a while if they are fully resolved.

BTW... WOW !!! This NG "scrolls-off" previous postings
FAST.. due to the * very * high * volume * of postings.
I had trouble even finding my original posting.

Thanks
