system error on start up

I have a problem with start up of my lap top
I get a message: Isass.exe system error The instruction at 0x00010010
referenced memory at "0x75b6d534". The memory could not be"".
I have tried every option in the F8 start up menu options.
My operating system is XP Professional.
The laptop Compaq E500 Armada will not pass this message and will not open
or start at all. Is there anything I can do? I also do not have the XP CD,
as I bought this computer second hand; it did not come with any system
software.
I have hundreds of files on this hard drive that are involved in a court
case, and I need to retrieve them.
I have read all of the questions and answers posted so far and have
downloaded the removal software onto a disk, however without being able to
get to the start up menu, it is unusable.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You need to buy a virus removal software, and boot your laptop from that
disk/cd. When booting, press F12 and it will allow you to choose which drive
to boot from, choose CD for the virus removal. I reccomend Norton.
