error message unmountable-boot_volume

I have not just download Xp and i have not just loaded any new soft ware etc
and when the message appears the cooling fan starts up. i am a fairly new to
computers so it will have to be basic or do i need to get expert advice
Its a Compaq armada 7400 laptop
