For the past four months, I've been having system crashes resulting in a
black (I guess win2k is black instead of blue?) screen of death. I noticed
that the error message on the BSOD referred to SMBios.sys. Today, for an
unrelated reason, I was in Device Manager and noticed that the system device
"System Management BIOS" had my favourite little yellow exclamation point.
So, upon opening it, of course I saw the indication that the device was not
working properly. Gee, so crashing my system isn't proper function?
Anyhow, could not locate an updated driver, so uninstalled thinking that
Windows would put it back. Well, upon reboot, Windows did not reinstall the
device.
So, long story short (too late), my question is this... is the System
Management BIOS necessary? If so, is there a difference between devices or
should I just Google it and download the most recent version?
