W2K crash on boot

Bob

Hello all,

I have a W2K system that crashes after most of the boot
process is finished. I often have time to log in and then
the crash occurs but it always occurs even if I don't log
in and wait long enough. If I boot in Safe Mode the
system is stable (but limited of course). There was a
message on the BSOD that says it is likely a problem with
a device driver and that I should enable (something) to do
with a Driver Pool but I could not find anything like that
in Device Manager. The system was previously W2K svc pack
1 but I upgraded it to svc pack 4 while in Safe Mode to
see if possibly that corrected the problem. It did not
help. Can anyone provide any suggestions as to how I
might isolate the problem? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you,
Bob

You need to get the exact stop error that you are getting. It will be
recorded in the system event log which you can access in safe mode. Also
if you go to system properties under advanced you can configure the
system not to automatically reboot on a stop error. That way the message
will stay on the screen until you reboot the system. The other way to t-
shoot the problem is to do clean boot using MSConfig which you can copy
for a Windows XP system.

Leonard,

Thanks for the quick response ... I appreciate your
time and help. Unfortunately nothing is every easy
.... LOL. I tried to look in the System Event Log and
Event View pops up a dialog that says "The event log
is corrupt". Can I delete the old log file so that it
gets recreated? If so, where is the log file located?
What do you suggest? Thanks again for your
assistance. I'm also going to reboot now (not in safe
mode) and see if I can get any addn'l info from the
BSOD.

------ I tried sending the above to your email addr but it
bounced ---

Ok, I got the info off the BSOD:

STOP: 0x00000050 (0x88800018, 0x00000000, 0x8043B537,
0x00000002)

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Address 8043B537 base at 80400000, Date Stamp 3EE6C002 -
ntoskrnl.exe

Any ideas? Thanks again,
Bob

Well the stop 50 is very generic and doesn't help determine what the
cause is. We would need to use a debugger on the dump file to see what
is going on. Normally you will get prompted to delete a corrupt event
log through event viewer. If not the event logs are in the same
directory as your registry...\winnt\system32\config.

As to the next step I would use MSConfig to clean boot the system. I
suspect that it may be a startup program since it is crashing late in
the boot process. Get MSConfig from Windows XP run it and disable
everything. If that works you can enable things in groups to figure out
the cause. I have used this process several times.

Leonard,

Two questions ...
first I want to confirm that I can use MSConfig with
Windows 2000 since you mentioned it was for XP.
Second, I don't have a copy of XP. Can I download
MSConfig somewhere and if so, where?

Thanks again for all your help.

Regards,
Bob

Yes MSConfig works fine with Windows 2000, I have used many times. I do
not know of anyplace to download MSConfig.exe.
