Hello,

I have a customer using the sysprep tool that will reseal the PC and
regenerate the SIDs before we capture the image.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282190

I currently reseal the image here and the burn a copy of the dom. Is the
issue that FBRESEAL can only be run once or is the tool incompatible with
XPe. If the case is the reseal if I burn the dom right after I click ok on
the reseal will that allow my customer to use this tool?

Thanks,

Debbie Giuliano

I haven't heard of using SYSPREP on XPe.
Typically what we would do is test the image etc., do an
FBARESEAL, then replicate as needed.
Upon booting, a new unique SID will be generated for each
system.

Fbreseal is used to reseal the target pc and regenerate SID's, there is no
need to run sysprep. Once you run fbreseal.exe the system will reboot
itself. Use whatever imaging software you have (Ghost, DriveImage, etc..) to
make an image of the system partition(s) before it boots into Windows again.
That will be your master image for distribution. The next time the system
boots into windows it will run a short setup wizard that will regenerate the
SID's randomly.

Make sure this is the last thing you do however, or make another image of
the partition before running fbreseal so you can return to that point if you
forgot anything beforehand. As fbreseal can only be ran once per image, and
making any further changes would require starting over.

One other thing worth mentioning is you'll want to configure the System
Cloning Tool in Target Designer to your requirements. By default fbreseal is
ran at the end of the FBA phase, you may want to change the reseal phase to 0
so you have time to install software, drivers, etc. before cloning.

Debbie,

Just one additional question to these answers.
Do you use EWF?

Debbie,

Do you know how to make EWF to work after the cloning?

If you use EWF with config partition. (Not Reg RAM EWF) basically the best
approach would be:

1. Disable FBA step in TD that creates EWF partition.
2. Make your image etc, (EWF will not work)
3. fbreseal.
4. Copy image to as many devices as you want.
5. Boot device and let fbreseal do its job.
6. After fbreseal is done make sure that you execute same command that was
disabled in FBA so that EWF partition is created.

You can find some info about EWF partition copying in product documentation.
If you have problems let us know so that we can help you.

I do use Reg RAM EWF. What if the customer installs his own software?
Will the same steps still apply? Or is there another way to do RAM EWF?

Debbie,

If you use Reg RAM EWF then you don't have to worry about that nasty EWF
config partition and how it will be copied since it does not exist.
Just make sure that EWF is disabled when you call fbreseal. And that after
cloning is done on copied cloned computer that you enable EWF before the
last reboot.
What if the customer installs his own software?
What about this? At what time do you wxpect them to install software? I
guess after you give them device that is already passed all cloning steps,
right?

If so, then they can commit or disable EWF and do instalation.

Hello,

I was just looking at your thread here, and am trying to figure out how to
image these XPe thin clients. Can anyone here direct me to a good resource?

All I would like to do is: 1) configure my ideal image (done) 2) somehow
"ghost" this image to my network share 3) "sysprep" & 4) push this image down
via a copy/whatever to new devices.

I am having a hard time finding a concise guide on hwo to do this. BTW, I'm
using Wyse devices, and am somewhat confused as well by their "Rapport"
software.

Thanks,

Mike,

I have seen you thread above, but I wonder how no one mentioned you to ask
Wyse about the license to change their XPe embedded system.
Basically you will want to download Evaluation of XP Embedded package from
MS and to read little more about XPe.
We use fbreseal.exe to change SIDs, Computer name and other stuff that make
image unique. But since wyse probably already used it once I wonder if using
it again would be smart.

Slobodan
PS:
All questions directly related to Wyse XP Embedded image you should direct
to their support.
