symbols appearing in text of WORD

I must have hit some button inadvertently - now the
paragraph symbol appears at the end of each paragraph and
each time I double space in my text on the screen and
there are dots between each word instead of spaces. How
do I remove this problem? (One tech spport suggested the
best way was to uninstall WORD and reinstall it - seems a
bit drastic.)

Must have been close to the tech support's (sic) lunch break. They read
the "standard" answer off the little yellow sticky pad on their computer
monitor to get you off the phone and "declare success" for the call
statistics.

Simply click on the paragraph icon on the Standard tool bar, or change
the view settings in Tools/Options View tab.

This sort of answer really gives tech support a bad name, doesn't it? As Rob
says, the answer is so simple that I would be tempted to call the tech
support person's superior and suggest a reprimand. To amplify Rob's answer,
you can either click the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Standard toolbar, or
press Ctrl+*, or, if neither of these is effective, check the View tab of
Tools | Options to make sure none of the boxes for nonprinting
characters/formatting marks are checked.

For more on why you might sometimes find it helpful to see these marks, see

Try looking uder "Tools" "Options" And "View" and see if
Formatting Marks is checked anywhere. You can uncheck it
and make it go away.
