Symantec liveupdate

Can't get Symantec liveupdate to work.
Secure server problem?
Seems I can get to any where else I want on the web.
Just can't retreive latest virus definations.
Thought I had all the latest patches, but..

Always get the following from liveupdate:

Initializing...
Connecting to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com...
Downloading catalog file, not available.
Connecting to liveupdate.symantec.com...
Downloading catalog file, not available.
Unable to connect to host
LiveUpdate could not retrieve the catalog file of
available Symantec product and component updates. Please
verify that you are able to connect to the Internet and
run LiveUpdate again.
LiveUpdate session is complete

You may need to reinstall Norton anti-virus.
Try running the command parameter (run line) for Live Update.
Type "luall" (no quotes) from your Run > Dialog box, see if the results are the
same.

See if downloading the latest version of LiveUpdate and installing it
fixes your problem.

Also, you may already be infected. Some virus bugs try to prevent you
from getting to the exterminator and update sites. See if you can get
to the online virus checkers available at Symantec, McAfee, and Trend.

Hi:

No solution but a similar problem, I can get all sites I
want to except the Mcafee site, so I tried syamantec to
see if their deals were any better and the same happens.
Appears to be somthing to do with activeX and scripting
although all the options have been manually set. Only
started after I upgraded to XP. Any ideas anyone??

Hi - update on this one. I manged to download AVAST! virus
cleaner, which told me I had WIN32gaobot-139 worm. WHen I
then tried to surf around looking for a specific virus
removal tool, on the PC that is infected I could not open
any pages that contained the line 'win32gaobot'. Tried
again on my work PC, and found that one of the
characteristics of this **** worm is that it blocks access
to Macafee, Symantec and many more anti-virus sites, as if
it is'defending' itself. Still trying to work out exactly
how to remove it,(requires a registry edit) but if you
also have this then don't delete the file it is in as it
hides in the boot up operating system and then you run the
risk of nothing working.

It may be a HOSTS file problem which was created by the parasite.
Look for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.
