svchost.exe

On opening internet explorer on a compaq deskpro EN
running windows 2000, I keep getting a message box that
says "svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed
by windows. You will need to restart the program. An
error log is being created." When I close the box
internet explorer works fine until I go to close it. Then
I must close everything that is running and then reboot
the system. What could be causing this?

The SVCHOST.EXE error can be caused by the msblaster worm and or its
variants.
However, it can be caused by some other attempt at intrusion. If you don't
already have it installed, be sure that you have the Windows Security Patch
below installed, which will help prevent this error.

Windows Security Updates for July 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/200307_windows.mspx

If that above did not work, or you already have it installed, then try the
followng.

1. download FixSBigF at symantec's web site
2. download patch for worm viruses at microsoft web site below;
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms03-026.asp
3. restart windows in SAFE mode (by pressing F8, when you see "windows is
starting..." on the black screen, as windows is starting)
4. run FixSBigF application for cleaning the worm viruses such as msblast,
mslaugh or teekids
5. run the patch which you've already downloaded from microsoft's web site.
6. congratulations, now you are free of svchost errors.

Hope this helps.

Good reply Jan. It will be nice if the OP and the secondary questioner sees
it. Line wrap (and properties) seem to indicate the MS-CDO is in use
so...... ;-)

Thank you. :) Well....we can only hope that if they don't see it, the
information will, hopefully, help other readers with the same or similar
problem. Ahmm....we are contributing to posterity.....aren't we?? <bg>

Well, a good reply should be saved for posterity. Unfortunately some of my
not so good ones are as well. <G> Oh well, win some, lose some... But, yes,
it is there for some to possibly draw some benefit from, as well as to sigh
with relief and say, "glad I didn't write *that*!" ;-D

AND, I see Conch1 has returned. Good deal. ;-)

Yeah...glad to see Conch1 has made it back and hopefully, the information
will help solve their problem. :)

Seems you're describing me as well. ;-D Every now and then, I have to
submit an "oops" or "correction" post. Fortunately, in some cases it arrives
before the return of the OP, but still...... :-|

see ya. <s>
