SVCHOST.EXE error mesage on startup

B

Bren

I am receivng the following error message when I get to
the Users screen. A pop up box with svchost.exe comes up
with
The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory
at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". Press OK
to quit or cancel to debug.

I've tried both quit and cancel and seem to go into XP
but my display settings are slightly different and my
sound card (or at least my sounds) are not working.

Any ideas ?

Hi Bren,

Generally, that is a secondary error message, usually a driver error. You
are going to need to isolate what is causing it, this can help:

Rick, thanks for the tip. I've found out that in the
Services bit of MSCONFIG, there is a service called Shell
Hardware Detection that is the problem. I'm going to post
another question to see if anyone knows what it is.

Thanks again.
