svchost.exe error

I am wondering if you guys think my install of XP Pro is trashed.

When I boot I get the following error message:

svchost.exe
The instruction at "0x7c9105f8" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The
memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on Cancel to debug the program.

If I click OK, the machine will continue to boot but none of my apps will
open.
If I click Cancel, the machine will continue to boot and everything seems
to work OK except sound. System sounds will play but application
generated sounds will not. If I click the volume icon in the tray, I get
"no active mixed devices available."

Any ideas out there?

Are there any other Warning / Error Reports in the System / Application
Event Viewer logs occurring during the latest boot?

Please post complete copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing
in the Application and System logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
