svchost.exe application error (different memory write error)

I just tried to install XP w/ Media Center and got all kinds of errors, so I
went back and ran an install of XP w/ SP2. I keep getting:

svchost.exe - application error
the instruction at "0x009a9eec" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
memory could not be written.

No matter what I try this will not go away! Suggestions?

I've posted this on several boards and I keep getting the suggestion "try a
clean install." Is there no way to fix this without a clean install?

I have a similar problem. I allowed automatic updates to run last night. In
step 7, this error appeared and stopped the update. Now, every time the
machine boots, the error appears and it disables networked drives.

If I boot in safe mode with networking, there is no error. Help please
