svchost.exe - Application Error

Over the past month, I've been sporadically getting this error mssg on boot
up, after signing into our domain.

Application popup: svchost.exe - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x7c918fea" referenced memory at "0x01c74622". The memory could not be
"written".

Sometimes, I can just cancel and continue to work as normal, other times, I
hit cancel and my computer just sits at "applying policy" screen and never
gets any further.

I've searched the web and found many references to thie first instruction,
but with the memory address ending in a 10 or a 5. My memory reference seems
to change with each error (0x01c74ba2, etc.). I haven't been able to find
anything to help resolve this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Info: Win XP Pro SP2 (fully updated)
Networked computer, part of domain running McAfee Virusscan Enterprise
8.5.0i (updated to latest dat dated 2.7.2007)
Genuine Intel T2300 @1.66 GHz, 1.0 GB RAM

I would suspect bad ram. Pull half the chips, try to cause the error, put in
the other half....

Have to go through our IT team for something like that, but will see what
they can do. I was leaning toward it being more a software problem than a
hardware problem since I don't ever seem to have any other problems, or
errors at any other times. Just this one on boot up. I was thinking if
memory was bad, I'd have other indicators. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi John,
Try to Turn windows updates OFF and see if you will get the error on start up.

Have a look in the Event Viewer and see if there Error messages (X) log and
double click the message to get more Info and post them back in your next

I will leave this agent repair to last:
= Repair the update agent
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%systemroot%\inf\au.inf

==================================================
the application popup that u get us due to a 3rd party s/w occupying
the reference area ..0x01c74622...
the svchost.exe host app was not able write the reference mem
area ...
and thus u get the error msg ...
i've seen these error msg coming up with hp driver application .. on
systems running mcaffee antivirus ..
my best guess would be to uninstall mcafee... install the
application that is spitting u the error ...that is if it is part
of any installable applicetion ...and install mcaffee antivirus
again ....
or atleats try thew steps with mcafee updates disabled from
services.msc ...
that iz gonna solve ur problem /.....
regards
