svchost error

I get the following error "popping up" after the computer has been on for a
few minutes

"the instruction at 0x745f2780 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory
could not be read"

The error report contains the following:

szAppName:svchost.exe
szAppVer:5.1.2600.2180
szModName:msi.dll
szModVer:3.1.4000.2435
offset:00014d62

The computer has been "playing up" since this error started, some
applications not starting properly, or not closing down. Computer freezing,
only way out is to force a hardware shutdown by holding the power button
depresssed etc.

Any ideas please?

This is not "deceptive software". I have subsequently found out it is caused
by Windows Automatic Update. The msi.dll file is to blame and a hotfix is
available if you can get it from microsoft--they have not replied to me yet.
A work around is to turn off Automatic Updates. There are other threads that
describe the process, a good one in windowsupdate newsgroup.
