Suddenly, only https:// (secure) sites can be accessed

Totally out of the blue, suddenly Internet Explorer will only access secure
sites (https://). ; I get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message when trying to
access any other, regular site. I have taken the following steps: (1)
cleared my cache; (2) cleared cookies; and (3) gone to defaults on various IE
settings.

I use Earthlink's Total Access, if that is important. Windows XP, NOT
upgraded to SP2, because I've had problems with that on my other computer.
One thing at a time.

Please help if you can. thanks. I'm finding I'm NOT a Netscape fan.
