I can only browse HTTPS sites...why?

Hello!
I am having a problem with IE 6 on a WIN XP Pro
machine. I can connect to HTTPS sites like my bank
accounts, but i cannot access regular sites like yahoo.com
or news sites that are only HTTP sites. When I try to
load an HTTP site, it comes up with the white blank screen
with the stuff about DNS settings etc., and the bottom
says "done".

I think one of my younger siblings must have changed a
setting but I can't figure it out.

I've also got Norton Internet Security on and have made
sure that it is not blocking traffic.

help!
thanks!

What happens when you completely disabled NIS (so it is *off* during the
test)? If browsing then works okay to HTTP sites, you need to delete
the application firewall rules in NIS and let it recreate them. Sounds
like HTTPS (port 443) is still okay but HTTP (port 80) is getting
blocked). Could be the app rule(s) in NIS just for IE were changed (and
now block it from using port 80). Could be some other app rule got
defined that blocks port 80. The log for NIS probably will tell you if
it blocked a port.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (SFC /SCANNOW for Win2K or WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk'.
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 folder of your installation CD-ROM (typically
D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System, and click OK. System
File Checker looks for the file, saves it as you requested, and then tells
you that 'the file has been successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.
