There isn't a Vista-wide problem since millions of users (including myself)
are using Vista without any problem.

So, all three email programs you have tried have failed?
Not sure what to advise you at this point except to use webmail until
you get this figured out.

What SP of XP do you have? I've heard that Windows Live Mail does
not work well on all of them.

I am having similar issues to the original thread, however, I do have a
question about disabling the email scanning option in AVG or Avast. If I
disable the email scanning option, don't I run the risk of infected emails
getting through? Please advise.

Yes, but that's no problem as long as the infection doesn't get out of
the email, and therefore be detected a second or two later. See here
where Symantec, the Norton provider who started email scanning,
admits it:
