Strange problem...

Win XP SP2 fully updated.

When the computer is turned on it runs POST over and over again then after
about five minutes loads windows and runs everything fine.
I have done virus scans disk scans and defragment, but no change.
It only happens if the computer has been off for a while ie overnight or for
long periods during the day.
When first turned on, trying to get into safe mode or last known good
configuration doesn't work.
I have checked all connections and seating inside, so have come to the
conclusion it can only be either the PSU or the motherboard.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Regards,

Kevin

If it's demonstrating a problem at POST this is before windows starts so
it's a hardware issue. Swap out the power supply to start.

Um. Could be worth a try. The PC is over six years old, would it have gone
by now? Does it only require the battery on startup?
Are they pretty standard or would I have to get one specific to the
motherboard?

Thanks,

Kevin
