Upgraded motherboard problem

Hi,

I have recently upgraded my motherboard from a MSI 6511 to an MSI 865GM2. I
also upgraded the CPU to a 2Ghz Celeron and new low density memory.
I remembered that after upgrading a motherboard before, XP would not run due
the change, so I was fully prepared to format and reinstall.

The problem...

When I put my XP disk in get the option to boot from CD, which I select,
then it goes to the "inspecting setup" window. It hangs there for a while and
then the system turns off and will not turn on again until it has been left
for a few minutes.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Is this a genuine Retail or OEM XP disk supplied directly by Microsoft or is
this a disk that was supplied by your computer Vendor? If the latter it MAY
be BIOS locked and won't install on the changed hardware.

It's a genuine retail upgrade version.

When you say the "system turns off"........you mean it shuts down the
computer I assume.
This points to a hardware problem not an XP install problem.I would be
checking the seating of all HD/CD/DVD/video card/etc....and the CPU !!
I would also enter the BIOS and take a look at the temperature
readings.......your quote.."not turn on again till it has been left a few
minutes" which is all it takes to cool down.

Yes, it just turns off. Motherboard, Ram and Cpu/fan were only fitted a
couple of days ago. I have double checked seating of all components and they
seem fine.
I can't check the temp in BIOS as I haven't managed to get into BIOS yet.
After trying a few more times, the amount of time between turning off and
being able to power on again varies quite a bit. I also tried a power on and
as soon as it did I powered off again to see if it would start again, it
didn't.

I took some voltage readings and the purple gives a 5.04v reading when power
is present, but 0v reading when it's not. Would this indicated that it's a
PSU problem?

Tomorrow I will replace the old motherboard and see what happens.

No. Purple is +5V standby. It should be there at all times when the
PSU receives power.

My thoughts are that the PSU is not powerful enough for the upgraded
hardware. It's eight years old and the 12v only gives out 15A.

When the system boots you should be able to see at the bottom of screen as
message that says..push DEL to enter BIOS.
Then you can see the temp and maybe the fan speed.........
There you should also check your settings to ensure it matches your
hardware.
The PSU is a possibility but usually 15amp/12v on an older mobo without too
much hardware is not a problem....but then you did not list your hardware.
I would check the BIOS settings first...and if they are OK then
purchase/borrow a new PSU and test.Safe the receipt ......

Can't even get it to start up now. 8(
Don't remember seeing the enter bios option before, it just hung on "Did
start properly last time" and then goes to soft mode prompt were I can't get
anything to run even if selected. Then it just shut down and I haven't had it
started since.

As is my usual custom, I report back with findings and fixes. This time
however, I am reporting back to let you know that you can never be to careful
and always double check things.

After getting my brother in laws PC back to my place I replaced both the PSU
and RAM to find no change. After a bit of head scratching I put on my
magnifying glasses and scrutinised the motherboard closely. It wasn't long
before I discovered that the JBAT1 jumper for resetting the CMOS was not
replaced correctly (by myself) and was only covering pin1 and not Pins 1&2.
(Silly Billy).
Once I had corrected the position of the jumper the PC started up no
problem. Went into Setup and loaded default settings.
I then proceeded to do a fresh install of WIN XP. Everything was going great
until "Inspecting system" section and then there was a click and everything
turned off. 8(

I will now start a new thread as this seems to be a different problem.
