Strange DNS routing problem

Karl Rhodes

Hi all...

I was asked yesterday to have a look at a home users machine because
he was having problems browsing the web and collecting his email even
though his internet "was on".

He is running XP pro sp2 and has IE7 installed. He also has a software
firewall/antivirus package called Panda Titanium (I've never heard of
it and have no idea if it's any good or not)

When we try to ping an internet url (www.microsoft.com) we got a
message saying the domain couldn't be resolved and it fails. However,
as I know the IP address of my works connection to the interent I
pinged that and got a response. Also the first line had some strange
characters in it for the domain name, something like øŶ. This suggests
to me that he has a good connection to the internet, but just couldn't
resolve the address. Please, tell me if I'm wrong...

We called his ISP and told them we were having DNS trouble and he gave
us the IP addresses of their DNS servers, which were already correct.
He suggested it may be a firewall issue and that we should contact
Panda about it.

Before we called Panda, we tried disabling all the protection services
of Panda (firewall, antivirus etc) and tried to browse using IE7
again. Still no joy so we decided to call Panda.

The guy we spoke to there was a bit short on the phone and certainly
not the kind of guy you'd want as customer facing, but he did point
out that if the services were all disabled then it couldnt be anything
to do with Panda. He then suggested removing Panda altogether and
reinstalling it after we tried to browse without it. Unfortunately,
time ran out for me as I had to be elsewhere, but I wonder if anyone
reading this would have any other ideas or suggestions for things to
try or look for before, or after, we do this?

Thanks

It may not be Panda's problem, but you can disable the panda and reboot the computer. Try one more time. If you can ping the a public IP but not name, any error when running nslookup? Also I would scan for any spyware virus. This search result may help.

troubleshooting ie issuesCan't load pages from specific Web Sites Can ping public IPs but not web sites Can't access the internet after cleaning the virus ...
