Stop event

Laura

I have a brand new Dell 8300 computer (less than 1 week
old). I have experienced two stop events. The event is

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xED58d553, 0xF7CB0C5C,
0xF7CB095C)

tfsnifs.sys - address
ED58D553 base @ED57D000, Datestamp 3f313057

I think this has something to do with my DVD+RW driver.
The device is TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E

Am I correct in my diagnosis? Do I need to update the
driver?

Hi - It could indeed be a bad driver, but I think the important words
from your post are "brand new Dell". The smartest thing is for you to
call Dell tech support (yes, I know it's a pain but don't wait until
the machine is out of warranty!) and have them figure it out. You may
have bad RAM (I've seen quite a few clients with new Dells with bad RAM
lately) or some other hardware issue. Unless you immediately changed
all sorts of things, drivers, etc., a new Dell should work perfectly as
it came from the factory. Good luck, and please post back if you want
more help.

Please reply to news group.

I don't think its a driver problem. I have an 8300 with a DVD+RW writer
and Windows XP Professional. I have never had a problem with the drive.

Sincere apologies to the group for my digging up an ancient thread--I
shan't make a habit of it. Updating the drive's firmware may or may not
help. Try disabling Sonic's Direct Letter Access (DLA)--it worked for
me.
To disable DLA, follow the steps below:
"My Computer" -> right click on the DVD drive then choose "Properties"
-> on the "Drive Properties" screen, click on the DLA tab, then remove
the check mark from "Enable DLA on your drives" -> Click "OK" ->
reboot.
All the best,
Trin
