stationary?

They moved it to the message store. So the stationery folder is under the
Windows Mail directory in the message store.

Create a new message in HTML and look at the message source and the BASE
href and that will tell you the exact location.

Steve, I posted a question some time ago on another group about restoring
X-Unsent and you were very helpful and I know that you're very knowledgeable
about OE stationery so I thought I would ask you about the following: I'm
wondering if you could advise me about the settings needed for viewing
stationery in windows mail. I don't have Vista yet but was going to have
someone who recently got it with a new PC to test some stationery related
things for me.

To create/view OE stationery on this PC with XP SP2 and IE7, in the IE7
security tab, from the Medium-high defaults I only change: "Allow script
initiated windows without size or position constraints" to "enable" to view
popups correctly. In OE6, in the security tab, I only change to: "Internet
zone (Less secure, but more functional)" and then also uncheck "Block images
and other external content in HTML e-mail". That's all.

I've seen a screenshot of the IE7 security tab in Vista and it has a
checkbox for "Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet
Explorer)". Don't have any idea about Protected Mode since I don't see that
checkbox in my IE7 with XP.

Anyway, I frequently use embedded EOTs and flash (in the bgsound tag),
applets (in IE not in OE since I have Sun JRE only), so I'm at least aware
of what's needed for stationery in IE/OE with XP.

What I'm wondering is what are the minimum settings in Vista in IE7 and
windows mail that need to be changed to view advanced stationery? Any
information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard,

I'd say you have it pretty well covered. There are some changes one has to
make in IE7 settings to get proper rendering of some stationery, but from
what I've found (reading stationery messages in the stationery NG), any
additional changes beyond what you have done are the same as those needed to
restore functionality in IE7 in XP. From my experience, its not very much
if anything that needs to be set in IE.

Thanks for your reply Steve and I'm sorry for my late reply back. The person
with Vista (who I'm communicating with via email) can now view stationery in
windows mail, but for some reason they cannot open stationery scripts (.htm
files) in IE from the hard drive but can view the same .htm fine on the web.
Must be a setting and I'm sure we'll get it resolved. I only have XP and
have never used Vista and have only seen Vista on a PC at the computer
store so I'm at somewhat of a disadvantage to know what settings to change
in Vista.

I do have one follow-up question if I could: In the IE7 security tab with
Vista, do you have a checkbox for "Enable Protected Mode (requires
restarting Internet Explorer)" and do you have it checked or unchecked?
I don't have that checkbox with XP and don't know what the correct
setting in IE7 with Vista should be.

Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard,

Don't choose protected mode for full functionality and to get scripts
working, you have to put WinMail into the internet zone under Tools |
Options | Security , but then be careful what you open.

Steve, the person with Vista who kindly tested several things stationery
related got everything working that we tested. From the screenshots they
sent, they were still in protected mode. They did change to "internet zone"
in Windows mail. Anyway, I was encouraged that stationery and a related
VB6 program work fine in Vista. The person with Vista embedded an
EOT in a stationery using a small VB6 program I wrote and then sent it
and it worked fine. I look forward to getting Vista myself. I've been fairly
happy with XP over the years and will probably like Vista even more.

Thanks,
Richard

Glad to hear it!

Having been the first to embed fonts in OE messages 10 years ago, its fun to
see people are still doing that.

Thanks Steve. That was well before my time. I started in stationery less
than 7 years ago. 10 years ago, I didn't even know what HTML was.
I wrote the embedding program a couple of years ago to be able to
embed EOTs and SWFs (flash) without having to use the AMC object
anymore, and it works well, including in Vista as I now know thanks to
someone with Vista testing it for me.

It's kind of funny because I remember looking at some of those old EOTs
in notepad and seeing them WEFTed for non-logical drives like: efg: and
wondered why anyone would do such a thing. Then I guess it was about
a year or more ago, I did a search for something and stumbled upon a
webpage that had a program you wrote for modifying EOTs WEFTed
with an older version of WEFT to make them work with OE4 I think.
After I read the description of how it worked, I understood about the
offseting the bytes for the mhtml thing and that it could also be done with
a hex editor. I thought that was an ingenious and very resourceful solution
that you came up with back then to modify EOTs so that they could work
embedded in stationery back in the very early days of OE stationery.

Richard

You're very welcome Steve, and I see your embedded EOT just fine.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the nice comments.

Yeah, the efg was added because you couldn't change the number of bytes in
the EOT file, if I remember correctly.

There are new tricks one can do in Vista. <G>

Richard, does this VB6 program also enable you to see other people's
embedded fonts? I know WMP messed things up in OE and there was a
downloadable tool from Letterman's site to fix this. I cannot view EOTs with
Vista and am (sorry WAS) an avid stationery creator (until M$ started
messing with things so much it got painful). EOTs come through as
attachments now. Everything else seems to work just fine - embedded pics,
music, streamed mp3's, floaties, snow scripts etc.

Also have you figured a way around the issue of forwading an .eml stationery
with Vista/WM yet? I have a ton of .eml stationeries I have collected over
the years and they are all useless to me at this time :-(

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Did you put WinMail into the Internet zone under Tools | Options | Security?
Unless you embed the way I did you have to do that as rendering an embedded
font requires that scripting be enabled.

Tracy, unfortunately the short answer to your question is 'no'. Ever since
WMP9 was released about 5 years ago, it has been necessary (at least until
Vista as Steve has demonstrated) to use AMC to BGSOUND embedding
(or use a program like my embedding program) to embed EOTs and flash
files so that they display correctly for everyone, regardless of their
settings (assuming they at least use 'Internet zone' in OE or windows mail).
For maybe about 5 years prior to WMP9, using the AMC object to
embed SWFs (flash files) and EOTs (as Steve first did) worked fine for
everyone.

If someone embeds an EOT and only uses the AMC object like we did years
ago, many people including myself will not see the EOT displayed in the
stationery and will only see it as an attachment to the stationery like you
describe. I used Bill Scott's WMP9 registry toolkit years ago and that was a
good solution back then, but for more than 2 years since I wrote the
embedding program, I have not used Bill's toolkit and do not have AMC file
embedding enabled.

I'm still running XP and I see that Steve have advised you about the
'Internet zone' setting in windows mail. If you change to that setting, you
should be able to see the embedded EOTs in both of our replies.

We have our embedding program available for download here:
http://richard-and-michaela.com ...and then click on the 'cool program' link
on the right.

About the X-Unsent problem, there's is a fix for that, at least in english,
german and some other language versions of windows. I used this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918766 ...with XP and it worked fine to
restore X-Unsent. I have been told that X-Unsent can also be restored in
Vista but I don't have Vista yet and don't know if there's something Vista
specific needed to fix it in Vista.

Richard

Interesting that you managed to embed using the <BGSOUND tag.

Looks like you are having fun otherwise. <G>

open Steve, I see that there is no scripting in the source of your reply
from Vista and that is neat. Like many, I'm still using XP and I will be
getting Vista at some point. At least the embedding program also works with
Vista as I now know and the program makes it easy to embed one or more EOTs
in about a second and use them in the preview and/or popup. The EOT
scripting is only pasted into the source and is never changed. I used 3 EOTs
in this reply and used one of the embedded EOTs in the mousetrails. Don't
know if this reply will stick in this newsgroup. I'll find out soon after I
send it.

Thanks Richard. I see now that I need to tell the others about this as we
are apparently living in the Stone Age as far as recylcing the same ol'
scripts and not updating!

I too used the registry toolkit from Letterman's site and it worked great
until Vista LOL. I have tried the fix for the .eml situation and it it won't
work. It's specifically aimed at OE and it's pointless searching through the
registry and adding keys that point to OE when it's not there anymore.

I wish someone would come up with a solution for all of these issues before
they launch a new OS. *sigh*.

Ok, off to d/l that tool. Thanks for the heads up on this. I guess I need to
re-code all of my stationeries on my website now *doh*.

Steve, using the BGSOUND tag is easy enough (and still necessary
in OE with embedded EOTs/SWFs/cursors, etc.). I used Bill Scott's
"EZ EOT" program to view my EOTs and clicked the "Copy EOT File Path"
button in EZ EOT so I could copy and then paste each EOT path/filename
into the respective BGSOUND tag which made it easy. It's click 'n paste
so no typing is required, for example:

<BODY title="" bgColor=#000000>
<BGSOUND id=bEOT1 src="file:///E:/EOTs/SF_Foxboro_Script.eot" volume=-10000>
<BGSOUND id=bEOT2 src="file:///E:/EOTs/ChitownScript_Italic.eot" volume=-10000>
<BGSOUND id=bEOT3 src="file:///E:/EOTs/BulletBalls_AOE.eot" volume=-10000>
<SCRIPT>cEOT()</SCRIPT>

When I save the OE message back to drafts, the EOTs display fine but
of course they are not yet embedded. With the embedding program,
using only drag 'n drop to embed the EOTs (and/or SWFs), it only takes
seconds to go from the message in drafts to a sent message (and using
the mouse only...no keyboard required).

I do see one small downside to your EOT embedding method in Vista since
the filename of the EOT is named something like: ATT01162.dat ...if
anyone wants to save the EOT as an EOT, they would need to rename it.
Back when I first started in stationery, I had OE4 on an old PC and some or
all attachments, I'm not sure now, were named in the ATTxxxxx.dat format.
I'm sure your method will work for embedding flash also, but the flash player
object (or one created by script) is still needed.

Anyway, I need to get Vista and try all the possibilities.

Regards,
Richard

You're welcome Tracy. I've heard that the AMC no longer works in Vista but
it's no longer needed anyway, nor is the registry toolkit. It's also a shame
that IE7 killed the DA control but that's the price of progress I guess.

For what settings to use for stationery, I recommend only the minimum
(enable popups without size/position constraints, use internet zone in
OE/WinMail, uncheck 'Block images...' in OE). With applets for example, I
recommend NOT installing MS Java VM. Support for it ends at the end of this
year and Microsoft is trying to get its customers to move to Sun JRE as you
can see here: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/ ...so my advice runs
contrary to what others may recommend.

The embedding program can be used even if you don't have X-Unsent working,
but it's easier if you do. X-Unsent will definitely work in Vista but since
I don't have Vista yet, I can't tell you how to restore it, but I'm sure
Steve or someone else can. Good luck with it.

Richard
