Startups in msconfig vs system information

Jeff Barnett

If I look at the startup list using MSCONFIG, there are 10-20 entries
and they all make sense.

If I look at startup programs using the System Information Utility, the
list is endless. There are dll, txt, and more in addition to exe.

Can some one teach me the difference in inclusion criteria for these two
utilities? It's clear they must be very different. TIA

My list (using msinfo32) under Software Environment | Startup Programs is
really small.
12 items (some useless, e.g., desktop.ini files). Most valid.

Can you be more specific as far as *.dll, *.txt and their locations?

Jeff,

Are you using Norton Anti-virus? Anyway, here is the fix for MSINFO32
problem.

System Information tool (MSINFO32) displays the list of all the system files
when you click the "Startup Programs" section ?:

And my question was - What's the difference between the two lists?

Yes I'm using Norton. It stop the fix-it program claiming a "malicious
script". Before letting it run, how do I get a warm and fuzzy feeling
that it is safe?

I wrote that script, and it's source can be easily viewed using Notepad.
